Spiritus contra Spiritum

How home truths from Dr Jung became spiritual  principles at the very heart of Alcoholics Anonymous. In a short correspondence in 1961, the last year of Jung’s life, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous Bill W wrote to express appreciation and explain the critical role Jung’s clinical honesty had had in the foundation of the AA approach. Jung’s reply risked a confidence to a fellow spiritual traveller, as to his views on the key to release from alcoholic suffering. This presentation will explore that conversation, its context and its impact on the emerging programme of AA, now imitated by over 400 other 12-Step organisations world-wide.
